Incompletes

Because of the NC option in ENGL100/101 and because of the consecutive nature of these required composition and literature courses, instructors cannot give students grades of IN (Incomplete). This policy should be clearly stated in the syllabus.

Incompletes (IN) in other courses are given at the discretion of the instructor, but should be given to students who have completed most of the course with a passing grade and are unable to complete the remaining work because of circumstances beyond their control. If a grade of IN is appropriate, all work must be completed BY THE END OF THE NINTH FULL WEEK OF CLASSES in the following semester (excluding summer terms). Arrange for students to submit all completed work to you well in advance.

Faculty should consider awarding a grade of Incomplete only after the selective withdrawl period has ended.

For more information about when and why to award a grade of Incomplete, visit the "Additional Grade Notations" section of the Undergraduate Policies page, located in the Academic Policies section of the University Catalog.

A written agreement between the student and instructor which clearly spells out required work and due dates is recommended as a part of any IN grade process. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences has created an agreement template that faculty can use to set up a contract with a student to complete the required work.
