The course will expose students to various forms of writing in the humanities. Emphasizing the writing process, students will engage in peer review, revision, and assessment through individual and collaborative writing assignments. An interdisciplinary emphasis will require students to think critically, analyze, and write effectively within their major fields of study. We will be reading, viewing, and listening to a variety of literary and other artistic works this semester, mostly from the movements of nineteenth-century Romanticism and Realism. We shall also look briefly at twentieth-century literature. The purpose is not only to enjoy and discuss these works, but to use them as subject matter in order to address how best to approach in writing different subject areas of the humanities. The theme we will be following in a great number of these works is the nature of art and the artist. Written assignments include, but are not limited to, a research paper covering some aspect of your major, a comparison of a work in two media, a film critique, a visual arts critique, and mid-term and final exams. The grading of these assignments is covered in greater detail below. While the emphasis on this course will be content, style, and research, grammar will also be a consideration in grading, and we will practice editing/proofreading va rious texts in terms of grammar as well as content and style.
