Waivers

Waiver of the English 101 Requirement

Any enrolled or newly admitted Mason students are eligible to apply for a waiver of ENGH 101. To receive a waiver, students must pass an essay exam. Students are eligible to apply for the waiver if they have:

  • not transferred in an equivalent to ENGH 100/101 from another university
  • not received a NC in a previous course
  • not received a NP three semesters prior to the term for which he/she is registering.

Waiver of the English 302 Requirement

Any student is eligible to apply for a waiver of ENGH 302. To apply for a waiver, students need to present writing samples that demonstrate proficiency equal to that of students who have successfully completed ENGH 302 and pass a two-hour written essay exam. Students must write the essay exam within six months from the date of notification of eligibility.
