Waivers
Waiver of the English 101 Requirement
Enrolled or newly admitted Mason students are eligible to apply for a waiver of ENGH 101 if they have not:
- transferred in an equivalent to ENGH 100/101 from another university
- already completed (or withdrawn from) ENGH 100/101 or are not currently taking the course
- received the AP score required to receive an ENGH 101 waiver
Students who meet eligibility requirements may register for a timed exam that allows them to demonstrate the writing proficiencies and rhetorical awareness equivalent to a student who has successfully completed ENGH 101 at Mason. Learn more about ENGH 101 waivers here.
Waiver of the English 302 Requirement
Students who meet all eligibility requirements may apply for a waiver of ENGH 302. The waiver is a two-stage process:
1. Portfolio Stage: Students submit a portfolio of three writing samples that meet specific requirements and demonstrate specific English 302 learning outcomes.
2. Exam Stage: Students take a 90-minute written assessment (using Honorlock) on knowledge and skills relevant to specific English 302 learning outcomes.
Students must pass both the portfolio and the exam to be granted a waiver. Learn more about ENGH 302 waivers here.
