Tips for Talking About Your Project

During the time that you are presenting on your work at the event, you’ll be talking with audiences from across the Mason community including students, faculty, administrators, and alumni. Your talk will need to be accessible to people who have no foundation in your research, but who likely do have a foundation in research overall (since they’re all part of the higher education community).

To help prepare for your poster presentation, we recommend that you connect with the Communication Center.

  • The Communication Center offers in-person appointments in Johnson Center 227E as well as virtual appointments on Zoom.
  • You can also browse their presentation resources.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when presenting your research at the event:

  • Prepare a brief talk about your research.
  • Attendees will circulate around, so you may want to be prepared to give this talk every few minutes as attendees circulate the event.
  • Focus your talk on the big-picture elements: Your audience, purpose, and research question/the answer to your research question.
  • Allow attendees to review your poster/flier/brochure and be present to answer any questions they might have.
  • Speak in a conversational and engaging tone throughout your talk and during the rest of your conversation with attendees.
